Staff Involment and Communication

We are pleased to announce the launch of our first IWL Notice Board. For those visiting St Peter's House it is on the ground floor opposite the lift. This is the first of many which will start appearing around the PCT. It will be an important communication 'portal' for IWL. Can we encouarge you to take a look and let us have your comments about the content of the information etc. IWL Working Groups

Equality and Diversity

"Senior managers spend as much time travelling to meetings and conferences as directors in some cases. Could the subsidy on lease cars afforded to Ads and Directors be extended to senior managers?"

Flexible Working

"Why can't senior managers have flexitime? Because we don't fill in a time sheet, we feel guilty taking advantage of flexible working policies even though in theory our contracts are for nominal hours. Different directorates seem to operate different policies."

Healthy Workplace

"Can we have a vending machine at Acresfield house serving hot drinks and snacks? This would improve my working life, and shouldn't cost the PCT anything, if we paid for what we used."

Flexible Retirement Childcare and Support for Carers

My youngest son attends a day nursery and according to the policy I am not entitled to any subsidies. My eldest son attended the same nursery, I am delighted with the standard of care and do not wish to move him to an alternative nursery to enable me to get some help with childcare costs. Other staff are in the same position as me, with their child attending a nursery other than High Meadows. Some people find the location impractical, others just feel more confident with the nursery they have chosen. I feel this issue needs to be addressed and a more equitable system put in place such as a voucher system for all staff who used registered childcare. These systems are used in Salford and other local areas. If a flyer is being sent out to advertise childcare subsidies there must be a problem with the system, obviously not enough people are claiming or eligible to claim this subsidy and that another system is required to make the best use of funding and reaching as many staff as possible. I pay £125 per week for my youngest son to attend nursery and £30 a week for before and after school for my eldest, it would be of great benefit to me and improve my working life if I was able to receive this subsidy.

Healthy Workplace

The provision of quiet areas within PCT buildings for report writing etc would improve my working life.

Healthy Workplace

I think the first and most fundamental aspect of endeavouring to improve working lives is to try and raise staff morale. Considering the following could do this: first, investing in a more spacious work place. This would reduce stress related illnesses and would provide a more healthy and happy working environment and therefore help to raise morale. Second, ensuring managers are aware of their responsibilities under the personnel policies, e.g. return to work interviews, referral to occupational health etc and thirdly, offering an incentive to staff who have no absence record and who have covered for staff who are off sick.

Flexible Retirement Childcare and Support for Carers

The trust currently offers susbsidies to parents using the hospital nursery or private childminders, and for vacation care. But what about those of us that use private nurseries that live the other side of town for which using the hospital nursery is impractical. Besides the hospital nursery is not going to be able to accomodate all the nursery children for the hospital and the PCT, so there is going to be an overspill into private nurseries anyway. I have heard people talk about voucher schemes, salary sacrifice schemes or some other pots of money to fund childcare.

During the coming months the IWL working group members will be publicising IWL and encouraging everybody to play an active part. Staff will be invited to take part in focus groups, interviews or surveys. The purpose of which is for you to tell us how we are doing against the IWL indicators and to suggest changes. An important part of our communication process will be our website. Can we encourage you to visit it regularly at www.bolton.nhs.uk/IWL to find out what is happening and what people like you are saying.
