MENTORS - Advisory Standards for Mentors and Mentorship
1. Communication and working relationships enabling:
- The development of effective relationships based on mutual
trust and respect
- An understanding of how students orientate and integrate into
practice settings and assistance with this process
- The provision of ongoing and constructive support and
supervision for students
2. Facilitation of learning in order to:
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the students programme to
support the student in identifying learning needs
- Demonstrate strategies which will assist with the integration
of learning from practice settings with theoretical learning in
educational settings
- Create and develop opportunities for students to identify and
undertake experience to meet their learning needs and required
learning outcomes to ensure fitness for practice
- Support the student in participating as a member of the multi
- disciplinary team
3. Assessment in order to:
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the principles of
assessment and the ability to apply them in practice
- Implement approved assessment procedures
- Provide valid, reliable and timely feedback to students
4. Role modelling in order to:
- Demonstrate effective relationships with patients and clients
- Contribute to the development of an environment in which
evidence based effective practice is fostered, implemented,
evaluated and disseminated
- Assess and manage clinical developments to ensure safe and
effective care
5. Creating an environment for learning in order to:
- maximise the range and quality of learning experiences and
opportunities
- implement strategies for quality assurance and quality audit
6. Improving practice in order to:
- Contribute to the creation of an environment in which change
can be initiated and supported
7. A knowledge base in order to:
- Identify, apply and disseminate research findings relevant to
the area of practice
8. Course development which:
- Contributes to the development and/or review of courses
