MENTORS - GUIDANCE IN BECOMING AN ASSOCIATE MENTOR

Steps to follow:

June 2002

1. Attend and participate in an Associate Mentor Study Day and you will then receive a certificate of attendance. You will also be given a list of Key Objectives to work on in practice, accessing the experiences of a student.

2. Complete the Key Objectives for Associate Mentors and keep this in your Professional Portfolio.

3. Complete a Registration Form and have it signed by your Mentor or Placement Educational Lead to verify that the key objectives have been successfully completed by you.

4. Send the Registration Form to the Clinical Placement Co-ordinator and you will then be entered on the live Register of Associate Mentors.

5. Attend a Mentor Update Workshop twelve months after the Study Day and annually thereafter.

NB. All Associate Mentors must take the responsibility to inform the Clinical Placement Co-ordinator of any move to a different placement area in order to keep information updated
It is expected that ALL first level nurses without a mentorship qualification will become Associate Mentors and in this way contribute to the facilitation of learning of all students on a community placement.
This reflects the Code of Professional Conduct (NMC, June 2002), Section 6.4, "You have a duty to facilitate students of nursing and midwifery and others to develop their confidence."
