MentorsIn Greek mythology "Mentor" was the wise and faithful advisor to Odysseus. Today's mentor is a friend, a role model, an able advisor and a person who supports others in a variety of ways. Good mentors in practice are crucial to every student's learning, assisting and engaging in student learning at every stage. They need to be up to date with the continuing changes in healthcare education whilst also being good role models to the students they mentor. Their care will be evidence based and informed by research and their knowledge will span the many facets encompassed in the diversity of primary healthcare. Mentors need to be approachable and encouraging, whilst also being the gatekeeper in upholding the high standards required in assessment processes. Practice representatives are involved in the development of assessment strategies in order to ensure that they reflect the clinical nature of the programmes. Mentors can expect a support network inclusive of clinical colleagues, education colleagues, managers and peers. Mentors are prepared for their supporting and educational roles in advance.
