Salford Triathlon - Bike Details

Once the swimmer has exited the water they make their way into the transition area where there will pass the baton (a timing wrist band) to the cyclist.
The cycle section is fun! Because:

  • · It offers a rare chance to cycle on closed roads with police escorts
  • · The route is pan flat and, sheltered from head winds
  • · It offers a chance to have your fifteen minutes of fame in front of the crowds
  • · You get to sit down for the duration of the event
  • · It can fulfil your life long ambition to wear tight fitting lycra (optional)

Once the timing band has been handed over the cyclist will then start the 12-mile bike course, this year the bike will be 4 laps of a flat route around the quays. The roads are closed to traffic and will be well marshalled and lined with encouraging supporters. Each lap will go past the main spectator area where your team-mates will be there to cheer you on. (The bar isn't open at this stage to distract them)
You don't need to have a specialist road bike or tight fitting Lycra. However you will need a road worthy cycle and a helmet

As long as your bike is roadworthy
it will be ok

Because of the nature of the race the cyclists will need to put their bikes in the transition area on the Saturday before the event. The cyclists also act as captain by registering their teams on the Saturday and making sure every one else in their team knows what's happening on race day. Don't worry about this role, as there will be other experienced Trust people about to help in the registration process.
Last year we were able to provide suitable bikes for all those who wanted cycle but didn't have a bike. So you really don't have any excuse not to sign up to be one of our cyclists.
