Salford Triathlon - Swim Details

This is the section that people feel most anxious about. However it has a number of advantages over both the bike and the run section. These include:

  • It's the shortest in both time and distance of the three
  • No one actually gets to see how red you get
  • Because the swim is first you get to relax and watch your other team mates long after you have got dried and changed
  • You get to the bar first!
  • The swim offers the biggest buzz as it's a mass start with all the attention
  • When else do you get a chance to walk around in tight fitting rubber without raising your neighbours suspicions

The swim consists of 1 swimmer who will swim 750 metres (30 lengths of your local pool)
The event starts with a mass swim start, last year there were 40 teams taking part in the relay so the swim start was not crowded. The water in the quays is both clean and warm, however most people will be wearing a swim wetsuit. Last year we managed to equip all our swimmers with suitable wetsuits. There is also a opportunity to hire a wetsuit for not only the event but for the whole of the season for £50. This option would enable our swimmers to attend the weekly open water practice sessions

Open water practice swimming sessions

If you need practice swimming in open water there are weekly training sessions at Salford Quays which are open to all. The sessions take place in Ontario Basin right outside the watersports centre on Quays Road and they run from May until the end of September. Sessions start at 7.00pm and last an hour. The cost is £3.00 per session but you will also need to pay a one-off fee of £5.00 and complete an application form to join the open water club.
Other PCT relay swimmers will be attending some of these sessions and last year they proved very popular
