Physiotherapy Services
Bolton's Physiotherapy Services care for people of all ages in a wide
range of areas, such as disability, sports injury, occupational health,
accidents and illness. Physiotherapists also provide advice and education to
carers to help them look after people who are terminally ill, ageing or
those with a physical disability.
Physiotherapists analyse the structure of the whole body and use physical
approaches for the prevention and treatment of injury, disease and
disability.
Physiotherapy has a key role to play in the care of patients recovering at
home from acute illness such as chest infections and strokes and in the
long-term management of disability or diseases such as multiple sclerosis,
motor neurone disease, Parkinson's disease and cancer.
Physiotherapists are experts in movement and mobility and therefore deal
with stiffness, weakness, posture, balance, moving and handling, and gait.
Associated with this, they will assess for, and temporarily loan,
appropriate walking equipment. They deal with the fear and pain of moving
and the lack of motivation to move, as well as the actual physical inability
to do so.
Physiotherapists work within teams of staff from different professions - an
approach known as multidisciplinary team working.
Referral
People are usually referred to the Physio service by their GP or
Consultant, but referrals may also be made by other members of the
healthcare team.
Each person is involved in their own assessment. A plan of care is agreed
which may involve, for example, exercises to be done at home as well as
treatment within a clinic.
