Podiatry - Eligibility Criteria

Relevant medical details must be included on referral, as the service can only be provided for patients whose medical history indicates that they are 'at risk' of foot health complications if they do not receive treatment e.g. Diabetes, PVD, Peripheral Neuropathy, Rheumatic Diseases, MS, Reynauds Syndrome.
Patients will be discharged from the service when the Podiatrist assesses there is no longer a need for treatment.

Self /Carer Referrals

The following may self refer, however, treatment is subject to assessment:

  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with Onychocryptosis (ingrowing toenails)
  • Children up to 18 years in full time education
  • Expectant mothers

GP /Healthcare Professional Referrals

The following may be referred by GPs or Healthcare Professionals, but are subject to assessment.

  • People with mental illness
  • People with learning difficulties
  • People requiring Biomechanical examination and provision of orthotics
  • People with chronic dermatological problems affecting the feet
  • People of any age whose feet are affected by conditions such as mentioned in the title paragraph
  • People who require advanced vascular assessment by our specialist member of staff

Finger Nails

Fingernail cutting is NOT within the normal scope of practice of Podiatrist or their Assistants.

Verruca

The department (in common with other Trusts) will no longer offer treatment for verrucae. Evidence suggests that most lesions resolve naturally via an autoimmune reaction.

Combined Care Foot Ulceration

Podiatrists provide treatment for acute ulceration hopefully until resolved. However, when foot ulcers become chronic and thus long-term regular dressings are required, the department will provide support for District Nurses. This may involve debridement, pressure relief, advanced vascular assessment.
